Skycaddie SGX – Review

Skycaddie SGX – Review
skycaddie in box
Boss asked me to to set up his Skycaddie SGX golf course GPS device from a company called SkyGolf.

So confused as to who would be the provider of such service I said “Sure why not”.
The Skygolf website, to say the least, the website was nothing fun to navigate.
While trying to find prices for the service skycaddie or skygolf (or whatever in the heck their name is) provides, I found old out dated prices and packages and bundles that were “limited time deals only” which were months past their “limited time”.
So I open the box and see

First thing noticed when looking for the USB connection, was a memory card slot.
memslot
Though there is nothing in the box to say what the storage capacity is neither on-board nor memory card max.

It seems the company does not update their website that often because the “extended plan” right on the top of the page says this

For a Limited Time, Buy 3 Years in Advance and Save!

Due to Popular Demand, We’re Extending This Offer Until August 31, 2013!

Here it is December 23 2013.

But I signed up for that specific plan anyway. and wouldn’t you know it. $20 cheaper now.  Total came out to about $100.
So.. okay.
Did the purchase, was prompted to sync the GPS device with the software, so I had to download an install drivers then follow a menu in a pop up that did all of the work for me.
Skycaddie software update and sync
Install and update took much longer than the 30 minutes suggested by the software. More like  3.5 hours.

Still watching it install.

All-the-while having no idea if the registration and purchase I did was somehow added to the software/firmware I am now installing on the GPS device. When I look at the site, I see that I have no plans. but the install prompt came up after i typed in the credit information. So.. maybe?

Is this place still active?

after a bit of time I get a notice ” your skycaddie does not appear to be associated to an account”
something about an unregistered ESN.

Okay, how do I register it?

Off to figure that mess out.
Tried the FAQ page.. nope… nothing.

Found it, the ESN is located in the settings area under “info”. and to enter that you have to go into “registration”

Keeps losing sync on me though. very frustrating.
Meanwhile I am looking at the screen saying #1 in range finder in golf”
yeah… but can you find the computer you are plugged into?

I get almost done and decide to install specific course. and it keeps  saying there is an issue with Caddiesync Express.

After a few tries, the map loaded even though the computer screen said failed. Not sure how it will turn out. Have to hit the course and see what it shows.

Compared to current devices of today, I would have to say that this device is past it’s prime. The software is poor. The set up is frustration. Use of the device is in no way easy. Just setting the device up for golf course, was a 4+ hours task.
Most of what this device does, is found for free now on Android.

Spy stuff Online

Since we were kids we all had fascinations about spy stuff. We all wanted to find the clues and catch the crook with special secrete hidden devices that observe the criminals. We all wanted to perform surveillance and undercover detective work. Okay maybe that was just my batch of friends. We also wanted to be ninjas so .. lol.

Well I found a site that has some of the coolest equipment for doing such things. They have cameras hidden in Lighters and pens listening devices and all sorts of stuff. This place is actually quite cool. If anything you can look at the site and browse their goodies. It’s cool stuff I tell  you

World War Android App

World War Droid

This game is addictive. You can play against your friends who have Iphones and the same game. I love cross platform games. Nothing more inviting to make me pick “do I want speed strengthy build and  good looks phone, or do I want reliability ease of button mashing phone” to make me decide what phone I want, than multi-platform games. would be cool if Xbox and Playstation would do this.

The World War app

I waited for a good while to play this game. While my co-workers had it on their Iphone, I was playing a similar game on Myspace called Mobsters. I knew that I was the one who could show these hipsters who’s boss……. but I just couldn’t get the dang game. it wasn’t out for my Moto, and it still wasn’t out when I got my blackberry. Almost five months after I got the G1, here is the game I have been wanting.  World War.

Great game. If you need invites post your gamer code here and let other readers add you.

Android Must Have Apps

Now these picks are not by some internet standards or by any other influence other than me seeing extreme use in them.

Shop Savvy Bar-code scanner. Yeah the results have not been up to what I expected but hey, they do offer a chance to look at the products on amazon and see what other people’s reviews are of the items.

Zxing scanner. Not near as good as shop savvy, but is another scanner so I have two to pick through. Choices are wonderful.

Cherry Rplayer – you can manually insert radio stations you like – I of course have ZRock in mine, because well they only have an iphone app and well I want to hear Zrock Dang it!

Opera Mini– because it does some stuff that google browser will not, like play myspace games right off their site, without need of an ap.

Pandora Radio – I love the way it lets you pick a music type and just ride with it. (audio out to audio in on my car, excellent sound.)

Digital Clock from Socialmobile , it’s like my back up alarm clock  (only use it while it’s on the charger though)

Twit.tv by Mediafly – all the Leo Laporte podcasts I can listen to.

Pretty much everything I have found, are just trials or do not live up to what they charge you, or just plain ol toys.
still waiting for Myspace Mobsters Android ap. Or a nice pdf viewer that costs no money and does not have trial period.. like foxit for Droid would be real nice. Mozilla Firefox for android would be nice. Hulu would be good.
Tv.com player would fricken rock if it had shows i like in full episodes. like Smallville Two and Half Men. but seems like everything that I like, is just 1 minutes snippets, really how much bandwidth could 300×200 really be ? They could soooo make some money from the ads, kinda like hulu does, if they would just do it . Youtube ap is great, but don’t hit pause, you freaking video fail every-time you do hit pause.
A-online radio has great features but it does not make the list. It just does not buffer very well. See Pandora radio isn’t as free roam as Aonline, but I can plug my G1 into my car stereo, turn on Pandora radio and let it play all the way from work to home. I plug in A-online and it plays for all of about 20 seconds. If it is not a buffer issue then the garbage shuts off every time the back light turns off. I know it’s one of the two and I can do nothing about either.

A very good write up on ZdNet called 10 Must Have- Android Apps

One Month Review of G1 HTC Android.

Well I have had my G1 for one month.

On day one, it crashed about 3 times.

On day two it got an update to something, no clue it happened so fast and I had no idea how to work anything on it, that I may never know. After the update I had crashes the whole day . Finally found the applications and what ones I could install.

I have to have all background processes turned off, otherwise it is super dead slow. Barcode scanners all seem to be just advertisement for national companies. Mostly target and  some drug store. Read More about the Android Barcode scanner here.

While searching the apps online, every single app has some clown saying ” app froze would not run had to uninstall found better one” then they say the name of  the supposed better one. I have come to the conclusion they are smearing  and trying to promote their own app..  If it freezes, turn background processes back on.. you will move slow, but yeah, it will work.

Storage,
I hate the limitations of this cell phone. I have an 8 gig memory card in the machine, but it seems to only install new apps to the phone, not the memory card. That bugs the hell out of me, because default storage for the phone is like one song. There is no way to change that.

The phone has been out for just over a year, yet they already have the G2 on it’s way to the shelves? if not already released???? why? they knew it sucked?

Screen area is huge and the resolution is remarkable. The camera takes an amazing picture, audio is pretty good through good head set, if you have the right adapter. Internet is super fast if you use the wifi settings and have a fast connection at your house (lol). I have actually seen over 2 megs a second, considering I have a 20meg a second connection, it is possible. Pandora Radio and ars radio are the best features. Other than running around in your skivvies playing with the light-saber app.

yesterday I pulled out one of my old Motorola phones, slapped my sim card in it, and bam, I get a bunch of text messages.. Has that freaking phone been missing my texts? Is that why she dumped me ? is that why i lost that bid for the job? what in the heck ???

Not happy, selling pretty soon.

I will be going back to my Blackberry 8100, just hope I can get used to the double tap simi qwerty keyboard.

WooHoo, My G1 Arrived

Logged into my ups account and checked tracking. They left the dang thing on the front porch. A $400 phone left on the porch. Really?

Oh well had family at home to bring it in for me. So I called.

Good thing, after the scare I had last night with my Blackberry 8100 (lol just look at last night’s post.) I have two phones in my pocket. Only one has the sim card, the other is ready and waiting for just in case the BB8100  craps out on me.

I have no idea what to expect of the phone.
