Microsoft backs apache?

Listening to THE LINUX ACTION SHOW

I found that Microsoft has put down a huge fund for apache development.

Crazy stuff. Will they buy it out? Will they steal ideas? Will they do a fair deal and actually contribute and not expect much in return?
