Working on Site for Fire Alarm Company in Houston

Busy day, Worked on site for a Houston Fire Alarm Company.

current location is hfdc.net
Section I am working on a temp directory to be moved to the front soon.
hfdc.net/html

Worked on it for a little while. Meanwhile the partner in this job
did a few things I do not like, I mean along the lines of indexing and google.
He had to duplicate like 20 pages and name them differently. The content
isn’t there but the skeleton is. During the time he was working on the site
I made a funny section just for him hfdc.net/greg .
I just jerked around with what he was doing with the site.
See the cool thing is we started working on this site while we worked on the flash site.
it was just to make a site completely out of html and make it weigh less than the flash site
and look as good.
The owner of the company loved the flash site. but as one of us worked on the flash version, we passed around the html version just for kicks. I will go back and fix every single page for indexing
with google bot/yahoo slurp/msn untill I am sure we can keep first slot for that site. I of course worked it so that if you did a search for “fire alarm Houston” the flash site was in first page. If you did a search for “fire detection Houston” the flash site was in first spot of unpaid links. No I did not do anything that would cause rejection by any of the bot programs. I worked really hard on that. Sooo to keep from twitching while my partner was doing what he was doing, I started working on a third page just for giggles. When he saw the directory name and file names, he acted spooked. LOL I love it, it was all in good humor.
Those pages will never see the business world.

Web Page Creator

Ok So I was sent to office depot 5 minutes before lunch started. I decided to swing by the burger place and get some lunch before I go in, and just waste an hour and 15 minutes for lunch instead of my regular hour lunch. I went in to Office depot and gathered all the things I needed into a buggy (office supply junk, paper pens toner ink) and walk in circles for a few minutes. While walking in circles and getting followed around by the depot snipers ( not sure they thought I was shop lifting, so i picked up stuff and would misplace it like crazy) I stumbled on the $9 software bin. While rooting around I saw a “buy one get one free” sign. So I decided to dig around and make sure I find something. Well I found a web page design thingy disk. I pretty much knew it would be crap because it’s price and the fact that the makers say nothing about it’s form or style. Like css, html javascript. Nothing just says something about templates.
The product is made by a company named Cosmi, the product name is “WEB PAGE CREATOR”. there is a circle stamp on the front with a symbol that says “#1” and some stuff in tiny freaking print though I can make out the work “productivity” . Well I scanned it with asquared,virscan.org, norton anti vir and found no reason to freak out.
So today I finally install the software. The actual software they are selling is all of about 10 megs of software, the rest, well, the rest is a 2002 version of open office.
The software they created (I think they created or just downloaded from some poor joke’s website) is just a shell script hand full of short cut links to open office items but named differently in the program. Don’t worry, when the open office items open up they do show their names at the top of the program’s window.
Well My True honest opinion, as far as web design goes, you can do everything this software bundle can do, Simply by using netscape navigator 7.2 suite edition. ns 7.2 suite comes with a program called “composer” and well, you can do the whole “what you see is what you get” web design part of using a program just like you can with cosmi’s erm, uh, java sun system’s? open office program.
plus netscape 7.2 s does not come with netzero crapware like this program does..

My call?
Walk past this thing, sure waste of ten bucks.

New job!

Probably not the most techy news I have done here but I got a new job working for a company called “HiTech” Fire detection.

A fire alarm and sprinkler company from out in Houston area. The guys here are great and very relaxed. Kinda strange to me because I have never been this comfortable in a work environment.

Well forget all the intros let’s get to the bone. I seem to have been assigned a task of building a website. See this guy Eein that I am working with built a site straight from css and tables and stuff which of course i think is fine and runs circles around the current site . But the owner saw me messing around with some flash ap and just jacking around with my desktop and a web template . Now see, I didn’t really want the task of building the site, simply because if it looks lame to me I will rebuild it , and rebuild it and it will never be finished. I have scrapped it like five times now already.

Well if a site is what they want then a site is what they get. You see though, I like the site that Eein built. It just looks better and is more sound and can be easily updated when needed, and it can be crawled at any time by any search bot. The owners of the site want a flash intro and a flash ap on the page , a flash ap that I really do not want to get buried in. They want a room to navigate in with a fire extinguisher and a sprinkler and a horn strobe and a lighted exit sign above the door in the back. I am sure I can do it, but man I would hate to have to edit it. I can edit it but dang .

You guys tell me what looks better. I really like Eein’s site I have said that from the start and am really against a bloated flash site. The current site is done in mostly Iframes and I really cannot see a bot crawling that which really is not a helpfull thing, ya know? See I know that they are going to be expanding to Austin Dallas and San Antonio real soon, like before the end of 2008. They surely will be wanting an update to the site telling people in those areas that it would not take long for us to get our guys on the site. Now that is becoming bigger work. I am still learning the ropes of the job and if I spend all my time on the clock building a site, when my evaluation period ends and I don’t know anything……. dude I will be screwed.

Looking at hours of photoshop and adobe flash cs3 man,!!!!

The dell machine and adobe flash cs3 and if you could zoom way in, you would see photoshop somewhere in the taskbar. This sad little machine is a trooper though, it is doing all that with only 512 mb ram, minimum for flash install. The 3.2g pentium is the life saver there though.

looks like houston.com has them in the forefront
