Crysis SP Demo Review – Video Game

To kick this off , let me explain, I am not paid to like or dislike the game, So I have a human’s opinion, I like some stuff I dislike others. If they where paying me it would all be 100% like. If I was paid to dislike , it would be 100% dislike.

I am not a fanboy who has been chewing on his blanket since he first saw the previews drooling on his keyboard waiting the demo. I just heard of the game less than two days before I got the demo. I gave the game an honest try and an honest feel . for those of you who know what color the main guy’s shoe laces are and why they are that color because you read the entire pamplet and news article and website front to back and upside down awaiting a clue to some imaginary riddle, Good for you, The sales pitches worked fine for you. Anything more than a sentence or two in response to this, really is overboard and you may want to ditch the yoda mouse and lunchbox.
Well I gave the game a play, or two. The demo is found here

The machine I am using is:

Direct x 9 c

AMD 2800+ Sempron 87*F

NVIDIA BFG 7600 512MB agp 110*F

2 Gigs 3200 RAM

Loading the demo the first time is a little bit drawn long, images are excellent and look very fun,Game ran fine at full settings on windows xp pro, just the dark setting and colors with some weird blue trim in the parachute scene. While looking in on the “suit tools” or options or what ever you see a circular list of stuff, you have no idea what any of it is, because it is unlabeled and it does nothing to assure you that you are on the right thing except for the cloaking, inviz.PNG or what ever that ten second thing is. there seems to be a strength, armor and cloaking that happens with the suit.

The fights where pretty great but it seemed very “grand theft auto” ish, it seemed like the bad guy just kept spawning up everywhere, and if you wanted one to just go away, turn your back and he will disappear when you turn your back. The narrator or guide or as the game called him something like prophet or what ever, he was a bit of a nag, so speakers went down just long enough for me to get killed by a guy that was not there a second ago. bad guys always know where you are , unless you are cloaked, then they just flip out and run in circles. The instant you re-spawn they know exactly where you are and are shooting at you within in a blink of time.

The water. Not so good. It just did not have that water look that you would expect from this new of a game. I mean there where bubbles and some sounds that let you know you are in water, but it just does not look like water other than your guy is now waving his hands in front of himself as if he is swimming, unsure if that run button helped any, could not tell. bullets hit you when you are under, and you can not pop up secretly , at all if you are being chased .Yes you can run out of breath. and yes he can outlast most of you, but does not live for ever underwater. sorry I did not see a timer nor a meter that let’s you know how much air is left, you just got wait till you hear him grunt or panic or make a painful sound. beach.PNG

You can pick up guns for spare bullets, and to carry or swap more guns . You can pick up numerous objects and chunk them , at people or just for the hell of it. I never found a med pack. No idea. You can enter vehicles , but it seems I haven’t figured how to man the guns on them, and or how to drive the vehicles. Maybe you can , maybe you can’t. I am not so certain that you can. I have no idea why all the bad guys looked the same, why they glow red or many things, not much to tell me why or how, I just assume it’s the pants the main guy is wearing.gunfire.PNG

Overall I give the game demo a rating of 6.5 . I will not be buying this one for myself . I might get it for my son, he will not take interest in it for more than a day, but just in case one of his friends have the game, it might be fun to lan party it. I can’t see it being very fun online. delta force 2 meets doom meets half life2.

  1. Ok, wow… I don’t even know where to start but this review was horrible. The guy nagging you is your team leader, he is not so much a narrator but your commander feeding you intel. He can tell what you are doing and what’s going on with you because of your nano suit, it’s controlled by them as well as you.

Secondly you don’t have health packs because your health (nano suit) can recharge your health, think halo. You have your blue meter for the nano suit’s energy, then once that is gone your health takes damage. If you took a minute to learn it’s capabilities then you would know what they mean. Who wants big labels on it when your trying to play the game and switch through the nano suit’s modes on the fly. It’s made like that for a reason, most people playing this game will take a minute to learn what it’s all about, it even gives you a cinematic demo before you start the first parachute drop from the plane. As for the water, I think the underwater graphics and play was done very well. If you notice when people shoot at you the bullets do rip through the water very “realistic” as the bubbles comming up off the hot bullets are present as well. You may be missing out on alot of the eye candy and etc. because your graphics from the view of the your screenshots is set to minimum.

As for not being able to shoot the guns on the vehicles or stationary machine guns, well if you couldn’t figure that out man then maybe you shouldn’t review a game you know not so much about. It’s default button if set to “F” to use them and 1-6 on the # pad or top row to control the seat of which you sit in that vehicle. Think multiplayer, you and 5 friends can load into a humvee and rip across the map.

I’m sorry it just clearly seems you have no idea what this game is all about and are missing out on alot of it’s feature’s for your lacking system, this game is next gen, meaning your (non offence meant) lacking system. I just can’t accept this game getting labeled the way you are portraying it without doing your due diligence. As for saying that this game not being fun in multiplayer, I think once the full game is released you will see just how wrong you are. As well this is just a demo, wait till the full version is released too, this is meant as a teaser.

I garauntee that your son, if he gives it a more fair chance you you obviously did will enjoy it very much. You can play the demo alone multiple times without playing through the level the same twice. You can try and be silent and undetected, using cloaking and silencers or you can just run through the map attacking from the cliffs jumping down at enemies using “maximum strength” for ultimate jump height.

Sorry to be posting this but I just think that you make yourself look bad with this review not the game. Totally missed the mark on this one.

  2. I saw very little time to “learn” the suit’s abilities.
My system is not lacking at all, I played the game fine with no lag no hesitation Might be because I know what I have and what to do with it.
Man this looks like I am being assaulted by a trekky.

  3. In order to consider this a fair and valid review, you must at least take the time to learn how to operate the game you are reviewing. From the review posted here, it is evident that the reviewer did not even take the time to learn how to do that. He could not figure how to do, and could not understand a number of things and did not even bother to try find out. His review is filled with statements like “no idea”, “unsure”, “could not tell”, “I haven

  4. I’m sorry but the criticism by the previous posters is well placed and has nothing to do with fanboyism, you really did a bad, uninformed review of a game which obviously you didn’t even try to understand.

I played through the same demo version as you did as well as the full game (of which I have 2 copies that came with two video cards that I bought recently) and got everything right away, and I can tell by experience that it Does Not Run Well on a 7500GT at High or Very High by any means (because it didn’t on my previous card, an 8800GTS 640MB, which is much faster than the 7500GT).

is this because you built the computer?

The game doesn’t come with instructions because it’s self explanatory. The first mission, named Contact, which is the one you play in the demo, is a huge tutorial meant to demonstrate how to play the game. The suit has an internal voice that tells you which mode you’ve just selected (“Maximum Armor”, “Maximum Strength”, “Maximum Speed”, and “Cloak Engaged”), so there’s no excuse for being clueless, and everything else is explained on-screen during the game.
    ******
Self explanatory? Then why are you explaining this to me?… you know you sat through every preview of that game for more than three months before it came out… you know you checked youtube on it… nope, not a fanboy.

Enemies have several states of alertness. If you’re standing they’ll be more likely to see you than if you’re crouching or prone, and even then they won’t start shooting right away. If you make a noise you will obviously alert them to your location, but otherwise they’ll just keep patrolling unaware of your presence. You can watch their state of alertness in the radar. Yellow and red enemy arrows will appear on the radar as your nanosuit tags them, either passively by being close to them or actively using the binoculars.

state of alertness does not mean that when you are getting shot at you are hit with a bullet the very second you either come out of the water, or uncloak yourself…. That is a poorly built game, sorry I ruined your life by not liking that .

As a previous poster mentioned, Prophet is your team leader, not a narrator. He’s the one briefing the team before everyone jumps off the plane. He communicates and receives intel from your suit, and that’s how he knows what you’re doing and where you are. In the full version of the game, Prophet proves to be as tough as Nomad (the player) when he storms in kicking ass with an alien weapon and aids Nomad in a difficult situation after everyone thought he was dead.

Ok the salesman got you to I see…. anyone who sits over and tells the story as it rolls out, is a narrator… yes you are under the impression he is your commander…. so?

Regarding water effects and everything else, from your screen shots I can tell with no doubt that you’re playing the game with everything set to low at a low resolution (800×600), so no wonder things look ugly. Have a look at my own screen shots at Very High on DX9 (http://www.corah.org/~jps/crysis/) and re-evaluate your review. I’ve even recorded a video with me playing the game as it’s meant to be played.

No thanks , from looking at your post here I am sure you have mouse tracers on your site that spell out crysis. and as far as the resolution, are you assuming this because you use tweak ui like I do? you do realize that I have limited storage here… Don’t you?
