Windows 7 Can’t run .exe files?

A friend was having trouble with her laptop not being able to run .exe files.
I had to go through a few checks to see exactly what the issue was. First I had her right click an executable file and see what general tab says for type of file. Everything checked out fine in there. Said “exe”

file type exe

file type exe

Now mind you, she doesn’t care much for computers but had a few things she wanted to do. So it was hard doing this over the phone.
She couldn’t open email or run a browser.
The trick was to change her registry

reg edit for .exe association

reg edit for .exe association

but again, she can’t run .exe files, and making a copy of her regedit.exe and renaming it to regedit.com didn’t work either. Seems that has stopped working on windows 7.
So, the solution was, to .reg file for her and email it to her so she can save the file on a thumb drive from another computer and then run the file her computer
she couldn’t copy it to notepad or create it in notepad, simply because she had no way of running the notepad.exe file. Don’t ask me why or how explorer.exe was functioning. Because I just do not know.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe]
@=”exefile”
“Content Type”=”application/x-msdownload”

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe\PersistentHandler]
@=”{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}”

Now the trick is, copy the text in the code box there paste it into notepad, save the file as “fixit.reg”, make sure it does not save with txt on the end. Then save it to a usb stick, thumb drive, memory stick, cd what ever you have to sneaker mail (hand deliver the file) the file to the computer with the issue. When the drive opens, just double click and say yes to everything.

I did do a search on the internet to see if there was another way. Everyone’s advice said to open regedit.exe on the computer with the problem. erm…… Nope. will not open .exe files.

Now I am not saying this is for everyone. She was on windows 7, and I am on windows 7 . She is using a laptop, I am using a pc. This worked for her, I might not work for you. I myself would go ahead and try it if it was the last logical solution or if I felt comfortable with what I have seen the reg commands. It just tells the computer that an exefile is exe. Pretty simple. So use that at your own risk. There is a chance that this will not work with your computer. This is not for anyone who is not on windows 7. This is for some (probably not all) windows 7 computers only. But.. .. since this post I have tried this Method on a windows XP computer that couldn’t open .exe files, and this Registry Edit did work. Here is the reg fix for Xp

Looks like the exact same set of commands.

Registry Cleaners and Memory Software

Ok I took a test drive of a few “computer Tweaker ” programs that have been well voted for on Cnet and ZDnet. They all were easy to locate, and I saw that thousands and millions have downloaded these.  I organized first by number of downloads, and by most votes. I then organized by highest vote score. all three times, these three programs came up in the top. So I decided they where the best options of this test.

The machine is Nforce 750A with AMD 5600+ two gigs of  pc 6400

dual 9500 gt 500mb Nvidia cards (sli)

Operating system is Vista Ultimate Service Pack 1

Installations were:
Registry Mechanic 9.00.0114 Of course this is a trial software.

Advanced Registry Optimizer 2010

CCleaner 2.29.1111

I really saw/felt no changes as I played a few games after each install. I am quite disappointed in the Pc gaming community. It seems there is a new wave of newbie techies advising people to use this stuff. Why do we go through this exact same wave every single time a new Operating system is released? It really seems like every time an OS is out, 8 months later there is a batch of people giving advise to use this stuff. Like memory boosters. After another 5 months, you start getting advice to overclock. You see posts like “Over clocking does not harm your computer” and masses of 20+ people backing this theory in threads of forums. Then three months later ” Help my video games have black streaks in them” Well you clearly over heated and fried your card.

End result.. Nothing fantastic. I guess what people see as being a new faster cleaner running machine, is a trick of the eye slight of hand. I swear every time I wash my car, it feels like it runs better.

Please if anyone has a new Registry software they want me to try out. and they are certain it works, Give me a thorough description of the software. Nothing larger than 15MB or I won’t touch it. This post i really wanted to go into detail, I really was ready for it. Right now i am nothing but so upset for installing this stuff I can’t write any detail other than… junk, junk, junk.

Personally I am sick of helping people after they stumble into this useless junk.
Your registry is written to for every program that is installed on your computer. These are lines of commands to tell your computer how to handle these programs. That’s it. Those lines of commands are never used if you do not use programs associated to what is has been written to your registry. Meaning: if you uninstall a program and never use that program again, then nothing on your computer will request that specific line, so that line does not have to be erased. that line will just never be necessary again. It does you no good to remove the registry entries from uninstalled programs. but you could possibly damage your computer by removing the wrong line of code. and no…. not all registry cleaners know every single program in the world and what they each use or write  in your registry.

My research of Finallyfast

There has been an advertisement on Television lately that I have seen coming up repeatedly. The advertisement talk of a program called “finallyfast” from a website called “finallyfast.com” .
So as usual I do my research before I download anything. then after I download the program i will scan it with as many different virus scanners as I can find.

On first analysis, I find that finally fast is actually hosted on a site “ascentive.com”. That site and it’s files have been noted as being malware with recurring charges to your credit card, that are really hard to get out of.
Site adviser website has noted that the content from ascentive.com is not safe . Siteadviser.

Ok so I went to the website anyway and started reading. They say it’s free from the get go. so I downloaded the file.

REALLY If you want to do a check up of your pc. I advise pcpitstop.com the only thing you need from there is an active x file and I find that activex file very safe.

but anyway I got the file and imediatly headed to Virscan.org and did a quick scan for any kind of computer cooties. This program is supposed to speed up your computer. Let’s just see. Well it turns out that all online scanners for single files, have a 10mb limit. This file from finallyfast.com or let’s say ascentive.com was 10.2 mb. Looks like they are a tad to large . So I compressed the file in a rar and proceeded to scan :-) .
one virus scanner found “Net-Worm.Win32.Bobic.k” could be a false positive but I found that other people found the same thing after the install. here are the results for finallyfast+worm and here are the results of finallyfast+trojan

Here is a forum that talks about the software and solutions.
