Unifi Ubiquiti Connections problem FIX

unifi
Tried Running UniFi and the dang thing won’t connect. Tried looking for a phone number and never found one, but now that I have an understanding of their software, I found their contact phone number +1 (866) 438-8247 found at www.ubiquityhosting.com
UniFi Controller Says Start-up failed
So far I have seen two notifications when Unifi controller had an error. One is a notice that says:

Initializing Unifi Controller …
Starting Unifi Controller …
Port 8080 in use by other programs
Start-up failed.

The other error notice says much less than that but the fix for both is the same.

Download the newest version of Unifi from their site to make sure you are up to date. do this by uninstalling the version you have and then insall the version you just downloaded.
Uninstall Java and install (depending on the version of windows you have)
64bit version jre-7u75-windows-x64.exe
or
32bit version jre-7u75-windows-i586.exe
Now run the Unifi

Don’t bother running UniFi-Discover. If it sees stuff it does not much matter if you are just trying to connect and create an account and change settings right away. For some reasons I seem to have problems when I run the discover before I get the Unifi Controller to connect.

From here on out if you get any errors trying to connect to your wireless devices using Unifi Controller, just open task manager (ctrl alt delete) and look for Java and Jusched (java update scheduler). and end those processes. Try again to run the Unifi Controller. If you get any issues after that, then uninstall and reinstall java and run Unifi Controller before you do anything after the reinstall of Java.

Seems there is an issue with UniFi and Java and the guys at Ubiquiti really need to solve this. At least bring the software up to the current version of Java.

Setting up Mercury Mail for XAMPP

Mercury32_46Been trying to set up mercury email for Xampp for a lot longer than I’d like to admit. Looked  at so many YOUTUBE videos of people just clicking away through the procedures of getting “local host emails to send and receive locally but have yet to find one that allows the emails to receive from external connection. Have managed to make the emails send  from within Pegasus but the recipient sees that my email has come from “truxter@localhost” even though that server has a domain name.

Have not figured out how to get Thunderbird nor outlook to connect though I think I am doing everything correct.

If anyone has any helpful sites they want to link to show me how to get Mercury mail server to connect properly, please comment the link below. and if you are looking for how to set up the email, scroll below, because if this page still looks just as confused as you feel, Means I can’t get mercury to work either.

How do you disable Facebook tagging?

Since Facebook does nothing to stop the sunglasses spammers from tagging you in pictures, let’s help you prevent getting tagged in things you don’t want to be tagged in. Because really, you can get tagged in other things that are really popular and your phone starts buzzing all day long over something you don’t care about. Neat…. a picture of a cheeto that looks like a belly button….

On right side of your screen click the padlock. a menu will pop up (see next image)

At the bottom of the menu click that spot that looks like a disclaimer but says “See more settings”
securitysettings

On left side of the screen click on “Timeline and tagging”
tagged
Next you will see “How can I manage tags people add and tagging suggestions?” look to the right and you will also see these three things:
Review tags people add to your own posts before the tags appear on Facebook?
When you’re tagged in a post, who do you want to add to the audience if they aren’t already in it?
Who sees tag suggestions when photos that look like you are uploaded?

Change those to what you feel comfortable with.
To allow no one to see what you are tagged in turn the first option on. That will prevent people from posting tags to your timeline. The next one if it is set to “only me”. Doesn’t allow it to get any further.
The last one set to “no one”, allows no one to get suggestions to tag you in pictures. This forces the tagger to have to type your name and purposely mean to tag you in a picture. Even though they see that you clearly do not want to be tagged.

Years ago you could tell Facebook to not allow people to tag you in pictures. That was removed when Facebook was working on perfecting their facial recognition software back in 2008 or so.
So don’t count on Facebook allowing you to block tagging.

Program xfinity x1 xr2 remote done easy

Program xfinity x1 xr2 remote done easy as I can make this.

IMG_20141013_011502I just had Comcast come and install my x1 boxes and xr2 remotes. The technician programmed one remote with 1 tv easily. The Comcast technician had a bit of trouble with the other remote.
The tv that the Comcast guy had trouble with is a spectra 32 inch tv.
I googled like crazy for a good while before I found the instructions I need for this remote. Since the instruction pamphlet only had 5 codes and I tried them all. I was worried. But here is how I got my xr2 remote to work with my spectra tv.

Bottom left tiny button says “set up”
Press and hold the set up button until the all power button lights up and then turns green.
Once that happens
Start tapping the channel up button.
Took me about 30-35 presses of the channel up button before the remote went through the codes and found a suitable remote code for my spectra tv. Some tvs probably take less or more.
When the xr2 finds the right code the tv will shut off. At that moment do not press the channel up button again. In fact do not press any button except the set up button. Just press the set up button one time. After that just press the all power button. The tv should come back on. Test the xr2 remote by turning the volume up and down and power the tv off and back on.

You should be good.
If the code doesn’t work right start over. There may be another code built in made for your tv.

How to Import Thunderbird Contacts into Outlook

This “How to” I will be using outlook 2010.
Some details in this import do not need to be said. Most of this you can handle with just looking at the pictures and seeing what is highlighted in the images to help you identify the links and buttons I am talking about.
Before any of this, you need to go to Thunderbird and export your contacts. Save the file as a .csv file (comma separated value), with a name you will remember and identify easily. I select to name the file “contacts” and saved the file to desktop so I can find it later.
Here are the steps for exporting Thunderbird contacts to a format that outlook can read

  1. Open Thunderbird, then go to Tools and then Address Book

  2. In the Address Book window, select Tools again and then Export…

  3. In the dropdown menu for Save as type…, choose Comma Separated

  4. Type in a file name (e.g. contacts or addresses), and then click Save.

Not so bad. was it?

Outlook_import_1 Step 1: is pretty easy. Click the image here and see what is highlighted.
On the left hand side of your screen click on the top left where you see “File”. Then Click “Open” just to the right of that and down. Then to the right a tad more and down click on “Import”.
On Outlook 2010 you will see two arrow pointing in opposite directs. Pretty easy to see.
If not, please look at the image I posted here, again.

Outlook_import_2 Step 2: A little window will pop open and have a few choices of your next step. For me and most likely for you the choice should be “import from another program or file”. Should be about midway in the list.
Now click “Next”.
What this means is that the CSV (Comma Separated Value) file you exported from Thunderbird is not a file that is directly out of the outlook “typical” file types. But Outlook will work with the file. You just have a couple steps to take to make outlook understand. These are coming up ahead.

Outlook_import_3 Step 3: Now is where you select “Comma Separated Value (CSV). Click that Should be Third down in the choices. Now click “Next”. Hopefully you save the contact exported csv file under name you can identify and in a location where you can find it. For me the file looks like an Excel file with a big letter X in the left corner and a large capitol A in the middle of it.
I keep thinking this is a Font installer. but it is not.
If you need to got to where you saved the file and open it. It should look just like an excel file with lots of names and email addresses inside of it.

Outlook_import_4 Step 4: is the one that is kind of multiple choice and sort of up to you. Do you want to allow duplicate contacts? because you could have more than one George Bush in your contacts.
If you are uncertain, may I recommend that you allow and then later go through your contacts and remove the duplicates that you feel are unnecessary?
But if you currently have no contacts in your Outlook, then go ahead and select not to allow duplicate contacts.
Seems like the safest bet that way.
Press “Next”

Outlook_import_5 Step 5:  is asking you where you want to import this information. Go ahead and select “contacts and press the “Next” button.
This will transfer a copy of the contacts in the CSV file you exported from Thunderbird, into something that outlook can read.
Almost as if you are uploading and translating the file from opensource format to proprietary format.
Almost…

Outlook_import_6 Step 6: this one you have to slow your stroll.
Now you have to work.
It’s not hard work but you do have to work a bit here.
Select ” Map Custom Fields” on the right hand side of the small window. This is about to pop open a window , you just have to match things . Don’t freak out.
Click “Next”

Outlook_import_7 Step 7: You select the fields on the left one by one and match them with the fields on the right.
Choices that are on the left that are not on the right, you either have to improvise or do without.
Like First Name, you have to click the plus symbol (+) next to the word “Name” and when it opens to more choices, select “First Name”.
Do the same with last name. and phone number and email address. and another contact information you can think of that you actually use. If there are choices on the left that you never use,  then you don’t have to worry about the. If you are uncertain, open the file you backed up from Thunderbird and scroll through the columns and you will see what choices are used and what choices are not used and what information is in them. The columns are the same items as what’s in the left hand screen on the “map custom fields” window. The right hand side of that window is how windows sees contacts. You have to make them match. Wikipedia has an Equivalence chart to show you what each mean.

Click next and you are done with this. Your Thunderbird contacts have now been imported into Outlook .

The rest is pretty simple to do and something you can do repeatedly
Also if you are in an office environment, and want all of your employees to start off with the same contacts, may I suggest that you complete these steps with the first computer, then export the contacts in a microsoft format and save it to a portable media storage device of your choice and walk from desk to desk and set them each up?

How to fight CRYPTOLOCKER

The way to beat Cryptolocker is pretty much like all ransomware. With one exception.
Hopefully you have a great back up process and can separate all computers from the infected computer on your network.
Start with these old school free tools of the trade.
Run them all if you want to make sure you get everything.
RogueKiller.exe  This will hunt down the deepest of virus.
ATF-Cleaner.exe helps clear up what’s on your computer in folders that you got locked out of in the attack. empties trash and cache and a bunch of stuff all at the same time
Spybotweak these days but doesn’t kill you to give it a scan and let it clean a few things up too.
[Microsoft Essentials Windows 7] | [Windows Defender Windows 8]..Not a bad free Virus Scanner. Works pretty good. Works best if installed before you get the virus. Protects better than any other virus scanner. Free or otherwise.
unhide.exe will get your icons back if you lost them and your files back if they disappeared when the virus hit you.
Malwarebytes– free and good strong software
Super Anti-Spyware – Stupid name, great product. oh and it has a free version.
Emergency Kit Scanner – I use this one anytime a friend calls me for help

So… What is Cryptolocker? Cryptolocker is like all ransom-ware of the past. In fact it looks just like antivirus 2012 except. Cryptolocker comes right out and says “hey we locked down your file, pay us and we will unlock your file, if you do not pay us, we will delete the password that we have on file for you file and you pretty well screwed forever”. This is straight up extortion.  no matter what they call it, it is what it’s function is. To brutally force you to pay the virus maker’s fee to get your files back.

Protip.. Install MSE (Microsoft security essentials) before you get any virus.. It doesn’t cost anything and uses very little resources. Plus MSE is made by the people who made your operating system, it knows when unauthorized activity has occurred.. and well, it should be their responsibility to secure and protect your computer.

Cryptowall 3.0 Is the same but more developed to protect it’s self. Here’s Trend Micro explaining how Encryptowall 3.0 functions and looks.

Getting Microsoft Office Keyboard to work on Windows 7 64 bit

but, my AHK file does not magically show the H icon as I was told it would. Seemingly because tehre is nothing writing to the regestry on my computer and the AutoHotkey.exe files is just that. A stand alone program.
I later tried the Compiler on the AHK websites and even made my own little nifty executable with the hot key and scroll wheel commands already in it.

Again, no help

It took heavy use of Google for me to get every button functioning except scroll wheel.

The latest drivers helped tremendously minus wheel support as mention, except, when I open the intellitype pro software the tab for keyboard settings is greyed out. Says “No Microsoft usb keyboard detected”.

I found a few files..(one labled ITypeDevices.xml), but they list the supported devices. I am wondering if there is an edit to that which I could make to force the software to identify the driver just well enough so I can add settings for the scroll wheel.

settings

Inside the XML file stated above, I located commands for each type of keyboard and link from that to a folder for a shortcut to a bmp file. So I assume that when the computer identifies the office keyboard, it will want to show you a little image. I am sure any image we put there will work just fine.

I am scared to make this edit because there really is no telling how many files are actually associated to this XML, that will need to be updated along with this ITypeDevices.xml file.

If anyone has anything to add to this please please respond, there are many people who need this answer

Adblock verses Hosts file

adblock is a program that blocks ads

Hosts file is a file with lines in it that tell your computer not to go to certain sites. This blocks advertisements. Hosts file is a file that uses zero resources.

Why would you use an adblock when you can just block a site manually and prevent your computer from connecting to said site?

Go search for mvps hosts file and download it and replace your hosts file with the one they offer. It’s free, it’s quick and it doesn’t use any processes to use it.

Plus their hosts file is updated often.try it. You can also block your roommate’s favorite sites from your computer so he/she won’t use your computer.

How to Create Blocks in Autocad

Let’s start with creating  a simple block for this post.
Creating a block is a good way to to lock a set of items in one place to prevent deletion of useful items during editing. creating a block is also useful if you want to use that same block multiple times and call that item back up again with the quickest methods.

First you have to draw the item you want to be in a block.

Once the item is drawn, you can now highlight the item you just drew in cad, and then either right click and select “paste as block” or if you are on a newer version of autocad, you have to turn on the menu at the top of the window . once the menu is activated in Autocad, select “edit” in the droop down menu you will see “paste as block” select “paste as block”
pasteblockmenu

You have now created a block.

Now double click that block. and you will see  block editor open. The block will be highlighted in the list of blocks. The name should be random alphanumeric and symbols.
blockedit

Let’s name that block something you can remember.
Now at the top of that list there should be a space you can type in. The blocks name will be in that spot. Go ahead and copy that name and close the block editor.
Now in the command area type “rename” a new window should pop open.
renameblock

In the area that says “Old Name” paste in the name you copied, or you can scroll down the list of blocks on the right until you see the name of the block you want to rename. In the field below “Old Name” simply type in the new name of the block and press “Ok”.

You have now created and renamed a block in autocad.

you can easily call the item up with the “Insert command” or just type “i” and press enter.

Please let me know if this was informative enough, or simple enough or not.
