Cricket’s Free Sanyo Zio Phone Android

I left T-Mobile.
Yep, I jumped ship. I went back to Cricket.
The phone that I traded my blackberry 8100 in for is a Sanyo/Kyocera zio. AKA KYOCERA M6000.
Since Cricket was giving away the Sanyo Zio if you trade in your working cell phone from your current carrier, I assumed I should.
This phone is not a brand new technology, at all. This phone was originally with Sprint back in early 2010 brought to Cricket in late 2010.
I was on a plan that gave me 300 minutes of talk time at a cost of $49 a month and I still had fave fives. To now, an unlimited everything for $55 a month.
The first thing was to call T-mobile and request my account number. The guy who answered the phone put on a sincere voice and Acknowledge that he knows that typically when people ask for their account number, they are about to leave the company. The guy asked me if there was anything i was in need of, to keep me from leaving. i let the guy know that I was not happy with how I have been treated so i am looking around, and my first step is to get my account number and that I may or may not leave T-mobile. Really, that was exactly true. I could have backed out of getting my phone number ported over to Cricket, at any time. The guy kept asking questions and hesitating, So i had to get stern with him ‘ look, I am considering leaving and you holding out like this is making me want to leave even more, i just need my number and will consider all option”. He said just about everything he could think of just short of “please don’t talk to other people, you will see how good things could be”, what ever he said. I just hung up because I got my account number. and that’s all I needed.

I gave the teller my account number, in less than 3 minutes the phone was in my hand with a temporary number on it. I got a text message and it said for me to text back with a code and my old number will be moved to cricket. I tried and it did not work. After I called the help line, I realized i wasn’t pressing they ‘*’ key first. My bad. Phone number was switched over to T-mobile just like that. Whole deal took less than 20 minutes to complete.

Cricket Splash Screen on The Zio

Cricket Splash Screen on The Zio

Ok. Time to grade the phone.
The Sanyo Kyocera ZIO from Cricket, by feel, is a lot like my blackberry, smooth.

Menu on The Sanyo Kyocera Zio Phone

Menu on The Sanyo Kyocera Zio Phone

Nice and thin, slick,no buttons to interface, touch Screen, except volume and camera. I have few complaints about
the camera button. Sensitive when I am not trying to touch the camera button, but doesn’t do squat when I hit that button on purpose. Volume buttons are excellent.

Volume Button on Kyocera Sanyo Zio

Volume Button on Kyocera Sanyo Zio

there is a data/charging connection on the lower left edge.
Headphone jack on the upper left edge, and an SD card slot on the mid right. All have caps.
Large speaker at the upper back
Pin hole mic on bottom edge.
Screen feels like plastic over glass. I could be wrong as to whether it actually is, it’s just the way the Zio feels to me.
Software.
Initial Storage space 180MB
Yes this an Android 2.2.1 system on the sanyo ZIO.

zio_display

zio software display

But
The pinch zoom feature, does not happen with this phone. Tap and zoom, yes.
Scroll ball, is a bit sticky and sluggish.
Huge Screen Perfect fit for downsized (not re-sized) hd movies
Watched Diggnation, Tekzilla and life Hacker from the revision 3 website and was impressed with the resolution and quality of the images and video, Nearly never a buffer time. sometimes The revision 3 server hiccups.
Camera takes a very high resolution video, even in room lighting. (never great to have just room lighting)
Every application I tried, all work fine.
There is some bloat ware that I had to root the phone to remove. Some bowling game demo and an “uno” game.
Many applications load constantly, you can not go into settings and turn them off like you could with the g1 on android 1.6. So battery life isn’t what it could be.
Nice fade when opening and closing apps. but again, sometimes sluggish. Keyboard seems to be miss calibrated, When you press the Letter ‘o’ you get the letter ‘p’ and so on… If you are a fast texting person, you will get frustrated. Just find the letter that the Zio mistakes you typing, and hit the far corner of the button you intend to pres. Works well that way.

Internet speeds for the Zio – using speed test app from android market
upload 700k
download 400k
That is about what I was seeing on T-mobile with their “Edge”.

Reception
At home and at work, my signal fluctuates between no signal, and two bars. but with that said, I received a call from a friend while I had 0 bars and the phone call sounded fine on my end, and the person on the other end never asked me what I was saying. I never heard anything unusual or anything that would hint of a bad signal, other than the caller’s T-mobile lag. Was sad when we both were on T-mobile, neither knew when to talk.
although I find myself back in 2003, holding the sanyo Zio up in the air to get a signal enough to send a text message. I don’t remember Cricket having this bad of a signal.

Back Of The Zio

Back Of The Zio

internet 10/10
software 8/10
hardware 5/10
reception 5/10 (I gave it a poor score then added some because the phone seemed to work even with no signal)
look 10/10

Full Over all Score is 7/10

And that is enough to make me feel as if I got another great deal.

Another unprofessional review from TruXter Tech Review and the budget Tech review

Firefox 5 out now

Mozilla Firefox 5.0 is out today.
Just released.
So far Conduit toolbars do not work with 5 yet.
They will. in due time.

Fire Fox 5

Fire Fox 5

Get FireFox 5.0

The firefox web browser is the latest and current longest running web browser by mozilla as of now. The firefox web browser now has just as much competition as the mozilla browser had back in the day when mozilla was the best alternative web browser.

So far I give the firefox web browser a 8/10 for the small amount of testing I have been able to perform as of now.

2010 is gone Happy 2011

We said good bye to myspace we jumped to facebook, we opened our heads and hearts more to twitter. and we made the right choice (Myspace is slow as heck now).
Hopefully 2011 Gives us all just as much of a smooth transition to a better realm.
We saw Hulu Launch into a fizzle.
Though the Decade we saw Linux and Microsoft shake hands, we Saw Bill gates and Steve Jobs talk face to face.
We saw Blizzard games and Rockstar games launch into monsters (Rockstar has been sued so many times, we could lose them any day now). We saw activision actually create good games again (first decade since the 80s). We saw Video game consoles have motion sensing remotes, we saw Satellite radio come out with a huge launch and tons of hype and then admit defate and two seperate intities merged to salvage their existence I still only know a few people pay for radio $13 a month is stupid. We saw a president win an election with the assistance of Social media and social networking. We saw a movie called Social Network. We saw Kevin Rose and Leo Laoporte come from a near fatal ending as Video game Tv (g4) and TechTv Merged into G4tv and then become just g4 when it shook off everything tech and 90% of the video game. This left the Tech TV crowd searching for a new place, so they started podcasts and located Tech websites and the like who wanted to have their website mentioned on the podcast. We saw Kevin Rose (of revision 3) become a Goliath with digg.com and Diggnation. We saw 1000000000000001 clones of digg.com like the implementation of the digg button into Facebook. We saw Leo Laporte’s shows just chug along and gradually grow into the Entertainment network it is now at twit.tv. We saw computers make it into our phones. And that is a great move. We are all now a ton less social and have little things we plop into our ear to drown out the world and hold a conversation with someone who is not there . We can now have video chats on our cell phones.
We have seen a great things come this decade. We watched a few great Tech things go. I hope we are still motivated to make more for the next decade.
I hope you all have a good new year
Until 2011 techies, Happy New Year

Cell Phone Wars – Poll

Curiosity is setting in at the TruXterTech camp. as to what Cell phone operating system do you feel gives you the most abilities that you like.
Rim- Research in Motion from Blackberry
Apple – Iphone
Android- Android/Google
ISA – Nokia OS
Windows- Microsoft
[poll id=”2″]
This isn’t a poll of phone manufacturers, it’s more of a poll of phone operating systems. If you could use any operating system on your phone, what operating system would you prefer?
If your cell phone/ Smart phone could run any cellphone operating system, what would be your end choice in phone software?

Robots are So Close Now

There is a crew in Asia (unsure where can’t see much face) that is steadily working on a robot with some human looking features and motions. The robot smiles, blinks nods and looks around (if those are cameras in the eye sockets). Many of the normal human actions of a smile and talking, happen with this robot. I haven’t seen the hands or arms of the robot move yet

The mouth is still very “puppety” when the robot talks.
I understand why they used female for the texture. couple simple reasons. 1 they are guys and i am sure it would have been creepy trying to build a pleasant non offensive looking male. 2 all killer robots are male.
I hope the end result in this robot venture is to help those who are unable to help themselves.

or if you want to be more gross about robots

And a bit more robot gross. Robotic arm being used by a living monkey.

Another robotic hand, This one does not work on the mind control, this robotic hand works on muscle movement.

both arms are robotic

I am surprised there is not a larger group of tech people working on these robots or competitive robots. Not so much like battle bots or robot wars. More like if there is competition, you have room for greater ideas and higher goals for achievement. Take a chance on your robot as apposed to just make it happen. If tech was done that way, those cyborg arms would be running on diesel fuel and there would be 20 foot hoses connected to the back of them.

Not So Good Google Adventures

Not attacking Google with this, who knows maybe people will tries and like em. Didn’t seem to be a bunch of hype for these those. So there is a good reason why they flopped

So I will mention these experiments and show you how to get there.

Orkut to compete with myspace when facebook looked like a flop.
Knol was to (in theory) compete with wikipedia. Maybe they should stick to attacking companies that make an income.
Bloggerto compete with wordpress, again, they do better when they attack groups that are profit only.

Sites build your own website with a website builder. Tons of other services that allow better tools and tons of storage and much more code. but some people still use the sites.

And a few great idea by google that you never hear about and that really need more focus.

  • FinanceBusiness info, news and interactive charts
  • NewsSearch thousands of news stories
  • RealtimeNew!Get live updates from popular social sites, news sources, and blogs
  • VoiceNew!One number for all your phones, online voicemail and cheap calling
  • TalkIM and call your friends through your computer

Google has started many projects and they have taken them quite a distance. Someday all of that is going to come together and make something useful. No telling how long that might be.

Google, their biggest failure is the biggest blessing. Everyone likes Google because the main page is blank. just a search bar. So they can’t clutter it up with “hey look at all of our crap” so… there are billions of potential users who will never know.
